Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV)

There is a new study out proving that FIV is only transmitted through deep puncture wounds. FIV positive cats can live with non-positive cats without danger of spreading it as long as the cats get along well.

Therefore, free-roaming and aggressive male cats contribute to the spread of the virus.  Many cats can live long and normal lives and you wouldn't even know that they have the virus.  Once a cat contracts the virus, it has a weakened immune system that hinders the cat's ability to protect itself against infections.  Bacteria that doesn't affect a healthy cat can cause severe illness in a cat that has FIV.   The best way to protect your cat from contracting the FIV virus is to keep it indoors.  If your cat has tested positive for the virus, it should also be kept indoors.  FIV cats should be fed a healthy diet to help keep their immune system healthy.
